I have been in love with jewellery for longer than I can remember and more than just jewellery, Im talking BIG jewellery... statement necklaces, chunky cuff bracelets, rings bigger than your finger(s)-kinda pieces. I remember back in my early jewellery making days when Id just learnt to create a macrame netting which could house crystals (amongst other things) and I chose out my favourite piece of clear quartz (a chunker of a piece at around 17cm in length), cast it in a leather bound net and made a turquoise garnet and amber belly chain to incorporate it into. I wore this piece for a good 2 years straight through my late teens until it stretched out to the point of no return and I put it away in my 'gotta fix that' box.
Only when I started Shantique I pulled it out again, along with all my other half made, half finished and half fixed creations and thought to my now adult~self how silly I must have looked rocking this around my (then) toned little stomach with it swinging around the place. Either way, I thought it was the most awesome thing ever and always felt like a total groover with it on and though I wouldn't use it as a body adornment again it has since been repurposed and now hangs lovingly from my wall just next to my desk, a token of my well spent late teen years.
My motto 'bigger the better' certainly hasn't changed in terms of jewellery, though perhaps a little more tasteful. No surprise then should be my complete and utter adoration with the SHAIYA necklace, an even larger/longer piece then the almighty ZAHARA (named after my future daughter ;) handmade in Turkey by my favourite craftsman and captured here by the awesome Rose Jane.
If you haven't yet indulged in an SD piece... nows definitely the time! And if you have, then your collection is calling out for this. Can you hear it? Can you hear it?
